What does Graduation mean?

Graduation is receiving a degree or a diploma for successful completion of a course or a study at a school, college, or a university. Beside this literal meaning, graduation also has a deeper meaning for the graduating students and their families. Graduating students and their families are going through a lot of emotions during this ceremony. There is a feeling of accomplishment. There is a gratification of successfully completing a course or an academic degree. There are dreams and hopes of using that education and making something fruitful out of it. Graduation for the most families in the world is the celebration of their kids’ hard work and achievement.

Graduation Outfit

Graduation gown and cap are important outfit that a student wears during his / her graduation ceremony. Most of the students try to savor the memories and this outfit forever. There are different accessories that goes with graduation gowns and cap. Depending on the degree and certification, there are stashes and hoods that also go with this outfit. But the most common parts of graduation outfit are gown and cap.

Why decorate Graduation Cap?

Now a days a lot of kids prefer to decorate their graduation cap for the graduation ceremony. They save this decorated cap as a memorabilia. They put their emotions and feelings in form of art on their graduation caps. Some of them embellish it with some props or glitter, some add inspiring quotes, some make beautiful paintings, whereas some inscribe inspiring words. Usually, days before graduation are extremely hectic for the kids. Some of them get time to decorate the caps on their own where as some of them hire or take help from people like me who love doing freelance art and writing. The most important thing about decorating graduation cap is your emotions behind your ideas of decorating your cap and not your artistic skills. This article contains different ideas for decorating graduation cap and a tutorial of how to paint and write a quote on your graduation cap.

Different Ideas for Decorating Graduation Cap

Decorating graduation cap depends on the color of your cap, kind of art you like, and amount of time you have. 

• Many stores sell the graduation cap decorating kits. That has different props that you can stick on your cap. Places like party city, amazon, Walmart, Hobby Lobby, etc. carry different kinds of decorating kits. Those kits would be generalize and not specific to your taste or emotions. 
• You can customize your graduation cap by making beaded or sequenced borders or art.
• You can draw your favorite symbol and decorate it with glitter, beads, or sequence.
• You can make a decorative border and write something meaningful in the middle of the cap.
• You can stick some cut outs from some inspiring movies or themes.
• You can write inspirational words or quotes or something you believe in with fabric markers, fabric paints, or acrylic paints.
• You can paint or stick or sew your school logo.
• You can write a quote on one side of the cap and paint or stick meaningful art according to your liking.
• You can just add your own signature and write your own belief on your graduation cap with fabric paint, fabric marker, or acrylic paint.

Tutorial – How to paint and write on your Graduation Cap?

To decorate your graduation cap like above you need –

• Graduation Cap
• Acrylic paint or fabric paint (contrast to your graduation cap color or the colors of your choice)
• Fabric markers
• Permanent markers
• Glitter paints (fabric or acrylic)
• Paint tape (optional)
• Ruler (optional)
• White marker (optional)
• Alphabet stencil (optional)
• Pencil (optional)
• Paint brushes (No. 00, 0, 1)
• Plate
• Bowl or cup for water
• Paper towel or a cloth for cleaning your brush

Tutorial

• Come up with a theme and idea you want to paint on your graduation cap. The theme and quote for the above cap is decided by the graduating student. 
• Since this is a dark colored cap, markers and pencils did not work on this cap.
• So I decided to directly use the paint.
• But you can use white or contrast shade permanent marker to draw and write first and then paint it.
• Decide where you want to write the quote. You can write in the middle and draw around it. You can write on either sides and draw next to it.

• On your cap first see, how much space you have and decide the quote or inspiring word accordingly.
• Graduating student chose this Taylor Swift quote for her cap. It is quite long, so I decided to write it first.
• Keep the front end of the cap above and write or decorate in a way that a person behind you can see it clearly.

• For this cap, I did freehand writing with the ivory white acrylic paint on the right side of the cap.
• You can use ruler or painters tape and write above them so that you can keep your writing straight.
• If you do not want to write directly, you can use alphabet stencil and write with its help.
• You can write with white marker or any other marker and then trace it with paint.
• Be careful and write correct spellings.
• Once you are done writing, let it dry for few minutes. Acrylic paints dry easily.

• Now on the other side using any marker that works on your fabric, draw a design or art of your choice. 
• I have drawn sunflowers according to the chosen theme.

• For the sunflower, I have used mustard yellow, dark yellow, orange, and light yellow acrylic paints for the petals. Brown, orange and dark green for the center. Please go through the video below for the step by step tutorial.

• For the stem and leaves I have used dark green and leaf green acrylic paints. 
• Important Note – You might have to do 2- 3 coats of the acrylic or fabric paints depending on the type of the fabric of the cap.
• Once you are done painting your flowers and leaves, give the finishing touches. 

• If you are interested, you can use glitter marker or paint and do some dots or designs around your quote and flowers.
• Let the cap dry for few hours.
• Your beautifully decorated graduation cap is ready. Once you are done with your graduation you can frame this artwork and hang it in your room.

Tips:

• Sometimes acrylic paints might not work as well as fabric paints. It will depend on the fabric of the cap.
• While using stencil, be careful and do not smudge your writing.
• If you are using painter’s tape, let your paint dry and then remove the tape. Do not hurry!
