Pizza Rolls or Pizza Pinwheels are scrumptious snacks / appetizers. It is very easy to make them. You can eat them immediately after baking or you can store them in refrigerator for 4-5 days and eat them whenever you want. Reheat them in microwave for 10 – 20 seconds before eating. These Pizza rolls / pinwheels can be used as anytime snacks, appetizers, or as to go snacks for trips.

Readymade pizza rolls, pizza pinwheels, or any kind of pizza variety are easily available in nearby restaurants, grocery stores, or any fast food joint. But making them at home does not take much time. If you use ready made pizza dough it just takes about 10 minutes of preparations and 20 minutes of baking. So I personally like to make these pizza rolls or pinwheels at home. I also like to make it into a fun mother daughter baking time while making these rolls / pinwheels.

The most important things required to make these pizza rolls / pinwheels are pizza dough (readymade or homemade); pizza sauce, basil pesto, or marinara sauce; pizza toppings of your choice; and cheese of your choice.

Pizza Dough

For pizza rolls / pinwheels you need a good quality pizza dough that can be easily rolled. You can either make pizza dough at home or buy a good quality pizza dough from your nearby grocery store.

Readymade pizza dough like Pillsbury pizza crust dough, Kroger pizza dough, Signature Café traditional pizza dough, any kind of organic pizza dough, gluten free pizza dough, and many other good branded pizza dough are easily available in your nearby grocery store. So if you just buy the readymade pizza dough and make these rolls or pinwheels, you can make them very quickly within half an hour.

But if you prefer to make pizza dough at home, it does take long time. To make pizza dough at home; you need warm water, active and dry yeast, all-purpose flour, salt, olive oil, and sugar.

How to make Vegan Pizza dough at home?

Time required – 2 hours

Necessary Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup warm water (neither boiling nor cold)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or any cooking oil of your choice)

Recipe

  • In a big deep bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and sugar really well. Cover it and let the yeast activate for 10 minutes. If it looks foamy that means yeast is activated. For this water should be warm (neither boiling hot nor cold) and yeast should not be old.
  • Add oil and salt to the above mix and stir everything well.
  • Start adding flour to the above mix little by little and start kneading the dough.
  • Keep kneading it until it is well mixed and becomes a nice soft ball of dough. If it is too sticky, add 1-2 spoons (or as much needed) of flour and knead it well.
  • Knead it well for another 5- 10 minutes with oil greased hands.
  • Now cover the dough in a big deep bowl with a clean towel and let it rise in warm place in your kitchen for an hour or until it has doubled in size.
  • If you do not have proofing drawer for this, you can let the pizza dough rise in the oven by keeping the oven light on.
  • Once the pizza dough has risen, punch the dough and knead it well couple of times until it is smooth and firm. You can use it immediately or you can store it in refrigerator or freezer for a few days and use it later to make pizza or pizza rolls or pinwheels.

Pizza Sauce / Pesto

In case of pizza sauce, you can use either a tomato based sauce or pesto or basil pesto. You can either buy ready made pizza sauce, basil pesto, or a marinara sauce from your nearby store or make it at home.

My family loves basil pesto as a base of pizza. So I have used home made basil pesto for this recipe.

Basil Pesto

To make basil pesto at home you need fresh bunch of basil leaves, garlic cloves, olive oil, salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese.

Step by Step Written Recipe

  • In a big bowl mix all the chopped toppings. Add Italian seasoning, garlic salt (optional), Indian Chaat Masala (optional), Salt, and Pepper to the chopped toppings and mix everything well.
  • Preheat the oven at 400F (about 200 C) for 10 minutes.

  • On a clean counter top (platform) sprinkle the flour. And put the pizza dough on it. If it is store bought pizza dough open it up according to the directions on the packet. If it is home made pizza dough take a big lump of pizza dough, make a big ball of it with your hands, and put it on the flour sprinkled surface.

  • Sprinkle some flour on top of the dough and start rolling it with the rolling pin. Make pizza crust with the rolling pin. It should be neither too thick nor too thin. Make it square or rectangular if possible. It will be easy to make roll out of it.

  • Now add your choice of pizza sauce or basil pesto on the rolled crust. Spread it evenly.

  • Add your choice of minced toppings on it. Spread it evenly.

  • Top it up with shredded mozzarella cheese or your choice of cheese.
  • If you want, you can sprinkle some more Italian seasoning and chili flakes on the cheese layer. (This step is optional)
  • Now start rolling the dough with your hands gently from the top. Please see the recipe video given above to see how to make a roll.

  • Once the rolling is done, seal all the open ends gently by pressing the dough with your fingers.

  • Now take a knife and start cutting small rolls / pinwheels gently. You can cut as many pinwheels / rolls depending on the size you want. Do not cut them too thin.

  • Line the baking tray with the aluminum foil. Grease it with your choice of cooking oil. Arrange the pizza rolls / pinwheels one inch apart from each other on the baking tray because their size will increase after baking.

  • You can keep them near each other too in any pattern you want but you will have to pull them apart after they are baked.

  • Bake them at 400 F (200 C) for 15 – 20 minutes. Keep an eye on them while they are baking they should be reddish brown in color.

  • You do not need any dip for these pizza rolls or pinwheels. But if you want you can use marinara sauce or pizza sauce or basil pesto as your dip.
  • Pizza rolls / pinwheels are ready to eat / serve.

Tips

  • These can be premade if you are making them in bulk for some event or trip. Store them in refrigerator and reheat them in microwave for about 20 seconds (time will differ depending on the quantity you are heating) before eating them.
