All About Cubism

Cubism the Phenomenon

Cubism is an abstract art form invented by Picasso along with his friend Braque. The cubist picture does not always look like it does in real life but you can tell what the picture is showing (or trying to say). This early 20th century art form – Cubism became a movement. It revolutionized different forms of art like paintings, sculptures, inspired music, and much more.

What is Cubism ?

Cubism is an art form that shows all of the possible viewpoints (or more than 1 viewpoints) of a person or an object all at once. It is called Cubism because the items represented in the artworks look like they are made out of cubes and other geometrical shapes.

Cubism in simpler terms

In simpler terms, Cubism looks like artist took a picture, tore it apart, and then rearranged it and glued back together in a different way. You can see the front angles of the person or a thing in a picture and side angles all at once.

Let’s make a Cubist Portrait

Just like Picasso, let’s paint the cubist portrait. Think of an object or a person you want to paint. You can choose to do self-portrait too.

Materials needed

  • A plain paper or a canvas
  • Pencil and Eraser
  • Foot ruler
  • Black marker
  • Colors of your choice (markers, crayons, acrylics, metallic, water color, or pencil color – you choose)
  • For this tutorial I have used colored markers, sketch pens, water color markers and metallic colors.

Step by step tutorial

  • Divide your paper / canvas into random 4- 6 parts by drawing random straight lines on it.
  • Now try and draw at least 2 viewpoints of your subject ( it can be object / person / yourself)

  • In this tutorial we are going to do one front facing and one side facing viewpoint of portrait of a girl. You can follow step by step tutorial. Or you can first understand, then paint the object of your choice similarly as shown in the tutorial.
  • This kind of painting at first appears odd, but as soon as we focus further we can understand the different views, profile and full face, as one face.
  • Select any one section and start sketching part of the object or person.
  • Once you move to another section, draw another part of the object or a person slightly misaligned than what it is suppose to be in normal life or regular pictures.
  • Once you are done with sketching, trace the picture with a black marker.
  • Color the different sections with the colors of your choice.

  • These kind of paintings focuses on different viewpoints of an object rather than making the picture look just pretty.
  • For clear understanding Click on the video below and please follow step by step tutorial.
